Analytical Capabilities

High performance liquid chromatography

The HPLC laboratory is equipped with a wide range of analytical and preparative instruments. These instruments are fitted with the following detectors:

Ultra violet, refractive index, electrochemical and fluorescence detectors. Most analytical HPLC columns are available, enabling us to provide you with a vast range of analyses.

Atomic absorption spectrophotometer

The atomic absorption spectrophotometers are employed for metals analysis in the microgram range with flame techniques.

Gas Chromatography

Our gas chromatographs are fitted with flame ionization, electron capture, nitrogen/phoshorus, photo ionization, flame photometric and mass selective detectors. A wide variety of injection techniques are also available. These include split, splitless, direct cool on column, pyrolysis, purge and trap with thermal desorption and automated headspace sampler and gas sampling loops.

Flow Injection Analysis

Currently used for ammonia analysis in a wide range of matrices. The detector employed is UV-Visible.

Ion chromatography/Capillary electrophoresis

We can provide screens for anions (as well as analysis) in a wide range of matrices by ion chromatography. Detectors employed are conductivity, ultraviolet and electrochemical. Cation and anion analysis can be carried out using capillary electrophoresis.

Mass Spectrometry

High resolution capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for identification and quantitation of organic compounds in air, water, wastewater, soil, sludges and biota. With computerised data handling and library search capabilities our GC-MS system can search the National Bureau of standards mass spectral library containing over 120,000 compounds. Our GC-MS techniques allow detection of pollutants such as PCB’s and pesticides at ppb-ppt range.

Low resolution electron impact mass spectra are obtained fro appropriate samples using the direct insertion technique. Chemical ionization (CI) is also available.

Infrared spectroscopy

Both conventional and FTIR units are used in aid in identifying unknowns and quantifying certain species. We have a wide range of accessories for the IR instruments including micro reflectance, micro transmittance, attenuated total reflectance for solids and liquid, beam condensers, gas cells, LC-IR cell and detector, and the sadtler digitized spectral libraries.
